For a couple to be legally married, by a Marriage Celebrant they will need to:
- Lodge a notice of intended marriage
- Provide evidence of themselves and marital status
- Provide evidence of age
There are no legal requirements for a Naming Ceremony, Committment Ceremony or Vow Renewal Ceremony.
What you need to bring for your first appointment:
- Birth Certificate or an original passport showing your date and place of birth must be presented
- Decree of Divorce/Death certificate if previously married.
- Full names of two adult witnesses
The marriage law requires that:
- Both partners to be 18 years of age
- Both partners to be free to marry
- Notice of intended marriage to be given not less than one month and one day before the wedding ceremony, and no more than eighteen months before the ceremony.
For example, if notice is given on the 1st of the month, marriage cannot take place until the 2nd of the following month.
